Edi Rama’s fourth marriage to power, after the plebiscite victory with 84 mandates in the May 11 elections, which gave him the opportunity to marry Albanians once again, was expected to be a waltz of happiness, where both the prime minister and the people he has led for more than 12 years should, despite the consumption that a relationship brings in the first decade, if not be satisfied, at least come to terms with the fact that marriage is a necessary evil, which functions well even as it is.
But while Albanians, accustomed to quarrels in couples, thought that a marriage with a second partner in front of an official in a civil registry office would not happen and Edi Rama would continue to be the same man for better or worse, it seems that the prime minister himself had a different belief regarding how this marital relationship, not so uncomplicated with Albanians, should function.
And what better way to start this new married life than by freeing the occupied altar of a church. What Rama actually did first, with the action to free the spaces occupied by illegal constructions around the Church of Theth. And a little further by hitting them with the IKMT’s fadroma, or even using the spectacle of TNT explosions in certain buildings, to show how strong the roar of the rule of law is. A state that until this moment had not only closed its eyes and ears to such a tragedy on a natural beauty like Theth, but had also promised, in the case of Edi Rama himself, to forgive fines for illegal constructions.
A promise that not only was not kept, but the Prime Minister himself never laid his hand on Theth, never commented on it after the shock that fell on the picturesque village. A shock that in fact seemed to be a noise to the ears of those who should have heard well, many kilometers away from Theth.
Precisely in Tirana, where another action with the hand raised high like the sword of Damocles fell like a scythe on the tents of the bars. Which, as rarely heard anywhere, had become the reason, according to the prime minister, for the occupation of public spaces.
Meanwhile, what remained incomprehensible in this story and which could not cover the sun with the government’s sieve, is how while the tents were quickly and easily pitched in the car bodies, which in this case found guaranteed seasonal work, what remained as evidence of an action carried out quickly and in violation of the law, in this case the time that should be given to the subjects, to dismantle or even respect the contracts, were the chairs of these same facilities that offered services in the capital. Which are still there today, in the same public spaces so-called by the government liberated from the collective madness of the occupation of territories.
But this is apparently only the visible aspect of all this, which is likely to be a legitimate action taken by the government, which on its part proclaims and simultaneously builds the narrative of the missing aesthetics that will be filled from now on by a group of local and foreign architects. They will undertake to reconstruct the concept on the surface of how the facades of bars or any structure that offers services in different areas of Tirana should now be, according to the tastes and preferences of the government.
A narrative that runs through people who follow the action with curiosity. But not those who have actually invested to provide such services. Who have seen their entire investment disappear within a few days. Maybe even their entire life savings. As there have also been those who have recently invested hundreds of thousands of euros, even taking out loans, without knowing that they are throwing their money away. As actually happened.
Meanwhile, the sudden collapse of these structures has also led to the loss of jobs for many young men and women who worked there, who had the only opportunity to earn a living.
But it will also lead to the reduction of thousands of jobs that are fed through service structures. Although it must be said that resistance does not seem to have been lacking.
Where there are still service structures that have chosen not to obey the government order. Which is actually an illegal action, as long as everything is done in the form of a threat. And there are no prior notices that give these structures the right time to close their relationship as taxpayers with the local government.
A crime scene quickly cleaned up, erasing every trace. Where few, if any, have gone to the Administrative Court to challenge the verbal demolition order, which means that in this action Rama did not waste a single liter of fuel to remove even one illegal window, nor did he spend a single lawyer to confront the owners of these entities in court.
A now-familiar scenario, to convince everyone that despite the fact that tango is danced in pairs, Rama has chosen this time to dance it alone and in his own style.
