Oh, what a death in this weather! The knife pierced the heart of Martin, 14 years old, a student at the school named after the peaceful cleric “Fan Noli”. They killed Martin. They killed another 14-year-old who, even after four days, still has no remorse. That knife in the hands of a child who today has the epithet of a murderer, ended little Martin’s life, but Martin still has the big wound open. A wound of the soul that has no healing in this boy’s family. “Martin was full of dreams and life, they took both. As a mother, I hope that no one experiences such pain. With respect, Florina and Angel Cani”. This short message of great sorrow was read today in front of the Ministry of Education, where hundreds of citizens participated in the protest in front of the most important educational institution, which resembled an “open grave” to await other Martins!
At the protest you see many sad parents. Some with tears on their faces and others can barely swallow the lump in their throat. There were also Martin’s peers, young shoots who burst into tears of hopelessness. Many other young people appear, without the burden of a parent, but with the full civic awareness that protesting for death today is valid for the peace of tomorrow.
Mother Florina’s grandmother, who captured the dome of heaven, returned to earth again. Death came to the doorstep of every home in the country. She sends her child off to school worried that one day he will not return alive, but locked in that white coffin. Every family is in mourning. They feel that violence, drugs, bloodshed, insecurity and death are roaming freely, with no one to restrain them. Did that ministry named after education stop it? The pain is there in the square, the tragedy, but the slanderous drama is played out in the Ministry of Education building. How can an employee (perhaps a mother too), open the third-floor window and, in a daze, make gestures that mix pain with anger? This officer, who is pitiful for her foolish mind, is also paid with the taxes of Martin’s mother.
You want to jump over those bars that think they are protecting your chair, salary, position, party, political ideal or human immorality that they display, but you step back again, where you have no breath to scream to the top of the sky, because Martini seems to see everyone. We look everywhere, can we see any of Martini’s teachers, school principals, guards, security officers or psychologists? They are nowhere to be found. “They are afraid to go out because they will lose their jobs” – a young man is heard saying while giving a short speech there at the protest. Is work more valuable than death? Is the fear of losing your job more valuable than the freedom to protest? How much is a salary that has been reduced even by a small amount of corruption compared to a child’s life?
“Resign” – are other cheers directed at the Minister of Education Albana Koçiu. The concept of resignation is like “mort” for individuals who think that the position is a privilege and not a duty. The biggest drama is that since the minister, government MPs and civil servants “justify” that the crime did not occur in the school premises, but a few meters away from it. “It’s the fault of social networks, Tik Tok or Snapchat” – other officials muttered today when they heard the Prime Minister’s speech yesterday. The photos of Martin in those protest posters kill you, along with the question of how that angel cannot suffocate the institutional filth that waits for the days to pass with the idea that everything will be forgotten.
A young girl who just turned 21 and dreams of becoming a parent wrote in blood red ink: “We will not forget Martin.” She left that writing on the wall of the ministry today, and maybe late at night those sinners of the mind who call themselves civil servants will erase it. You can erase a slogan of pain, but not Martin’s death. Forgive us, angel, someone killed you physically, others morally, hiding from responsibility, and the rest of us who protested in the square, or from wherever we were, were killed with you, because we feel responsible, more than the irresponsible guilty who still do not react to the most precious thing: life, which they took from you!
