This morning did not start like all the others, it did not start with the usual routine. Suddenly, a piece of news shattered the silence and turned this morning into a wound. This is how this day began. With the name of Enea Makolli, a young man, 34 years old, a police officer, whose life and mission were cut short by the cold hand of a criminal. The event took place in Maliq, Korça. But pain knows no map, it spreads wherever there are people who believe in order, justice and security.
Enea was not just a man in uniform. He was a police officer with a rare passion for the mission he had undertaken, with the weight of duty on his shoulders and the determination to fulfill it in the service of all of us, all of those who, every day, seek just a little order and a little security for their families. He knew that a uniform is not a garment, it is an oath. And he kept that oath until his last breath.
While we sleep peacefully at night, there are people like Aeneas who stay awake for us. While we complain about the little things in life, there are people like Aeneas who face real danger. This is the duty of the policeman. To stand between the citizen and evil. Often unknown, often unappreciated, always exposed. Aeneas chose this position. And right there, on the front lines, he met his death.
The one who killed him was not a random accident. He was a convicted criminal who had evaded the law and punishment for the crime he had committed for about ten years. Ten years in hiding, ten years during which he was a silent danger, a constant threat to the community that sheltered him, knowingly or not, or without daring to tell about it. He had escaped several police actions. But today, when he came face to face with them, he did not spare the life of a public servant. This is the portrait of evil. It is frightening not for its power, but for its lack of any scruples, for its willingness to take a life just to defend its unjust freedom.
And here lies the first and most important message. Evil does not sleep. It waits, hides and takes account. That is why we cannot sleep either. The police must not give up. Never. Every criminal who today thinks that he can stay in the shadows and wait for the storm to pass, must know that the state has memory, has patience and has determination. Evil is not the end of a story. It is the beginning of a promise. No one who has shed innocent blood will find peace until justice reaches them. The police organization must know this.
Enea today has become something greater than himself. He has become a symbol, living proof that service to his homeland and people has a price, and that there are men and women who are ready to pay that price. He is the motive that should keep every police officer awake. Not the motive of revenge, but of responsibility. Let no bandit be spared. Let no crime be tolerated. Let no citizen be left without the protection he deserves. This is the only way for his sacrifice not to be in vain.
And there is another message, harsher, but just as true. The police uniform is sacred, because those who wear it undertake to risk everything for others. Anyone who betrays this ideal, who sells out their duty, who falters when they should act, who forgets why they wore that uniform, does not deserve to wear it for even a second longer. Because every surrender, every compromise with evil, is an insult to the memory of Aeneas and to every policeman who has fallen in the line of duty. Only those who wear the uniform with honor belong to his ideal.
Condolences to the family of the deceased. No words can fill the void left behind by a son, a young man with his whole life ahead of him. But let them know that their son did not die unknown, he fell as a hero, and a nation remembers him. Condolences to all the honest police officers, who today feel that they have lost a brother. Your pain is our pain.
And a word for those who lead the police today. Such a loss can weigh heavily on the shoulders of any leader. But this should not break or demoralize anyone. On the contrary, it should serve as an alarm, as a renewed motivation. Let no one who conflicts with the law and the rights of honest Albanians be tolerated. The strength of a state is not measured by the days when everything goes well, but by the way it rises after a blow.
Today Enea Makolli is a star in the sky. But stars are not just distant lights to admire, they are a compass of orientation. Let him be the compass. The direction that reminds us that evil can be defeated, that order can be defended, that sacrifice is not forgotten. His light did not go out where the event occurred. It must begin to lead.
Eternal is his memory. Farewell, Aeneas.
